On 19th of April 2015 I ran my first Half Marathon ever. It was the Bonn Deutsche Post Marathon! :)
While preparing for it I went through an interesting experience of testing myself both mentally and physically. This life-shaping period inspired me to share this experience with all of you.
1) Give yourself a chance!
At first you shouldn't be too hard on yourself. Starting with small goals is crucial. In the beginning I said to myself "Ok, I am not in good enough shape to run two or three kilometers at once, but I will try a combination of running and walking the circle I imagined for that day". Day by day I was able to run more and found myself walking less. I also chose to run the same route every day in order to make the first achievementeasier to reach.
2) Persistence
Every day is different and in the same sense so was my motivation. However, even when I would run less I was thinking in a way that I will do more efficient training tomorrow. The important thing is not to judge yourself, because judgment leads to a lack of motivation. Instead encouragement is what counts!
3) Be informed!
The Internet is an endless virtual space of information. All the info concerning training, diet, preparation programs, helpful advice, sports articles, guidance, explanations...it's all online..just google it!
4) Determine a goal!
It's much easier to train for a goal. I have been trying different sports activities since early childhood. Unfortunately, nothing would last or when it did it wasn't intense enough. Once I decided to prepare myself for the Half Marathon the goal became much easier and reachable. It simply made sense. As well it's about the health not just about appearance. Health is the most valuable asset we have been given since birth! Respect it and keep it!
5) It's all about mind set.
I realised that it's all about how we order things in our head. Once I gave myself no limits of distances and time for each run, training became even easier and much more enjoyable.
6) The race!
At the Bonn Marathon there were more than 13,000 participants registered for the race only. Germans cherish great culture towards sports activities especially running. During the run I saw just a few people walking. They all seemed in such a great shape. The spirit of the race took over me and I became a part of it. The marathon flew and I flew with it.
Knowing that friends were waiting for me at the finish meant a lot to me! Thank you Laura, Yonatan, Thomas and Jola for cheering me!
I'm so excited to see what I can accomplish in the future!
